Student Support Services
http://sss.wvu.edu

West Virginia University provides a wide range of accessible and well-staffed student support services that buttress or augment Division programs. The majority of student support services fall under the auspices of the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, which integrates and administers multiple offices and programs. The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs “supports West Virginia University’s student-centered learning environment, allows students to fully develop, and, in partnership with our University colleagues, offers the highest quality programs, services, and opportunities.”

Incoming undergraduate students are routinely exposed to the range of student support services offered by WVU in FOR 101.

Academic support is available to Division students through the Undergraduate Academic Services Center (UASC), tutoring and learning resources, the Writing Center, Library Support Services. The UASC is open to students a minimum of 37.5 hours per week during regular business hours and serves over 7,000 students annually through a variety of programs. Academic advisors assist students in selecting a major, planning a course of study, pre-registering for classes, answering questions about their academic program, and providing our students with the tools they need to be more productive, self-sufficient students.

Tutoring and learning services at WVU include three “Academic Resource Centers” providing free walk-in tutoring. Each resource center maintains different hours of operation, but cumulatively they are open 159 hours a week (at least one is open at all times except between 12:00am and 7:00am). Additional specialized Learning Centers include the Math Learning Center (open 48.5 hours/week), the Chemistry Learning Center (open 9 hours/week), the Philosophy Learning Center (open 37.5 hours/week), the Psychology Tutoring Center (open 9 hours/week), and the Center for Writing Excellence and the Writing Center.

WVU supports student health and wellness through multiple channels. These include clinical services provided through the Student Health Service, Counseling Services, recreation and exercise facilities and the Student Recreation Center, and the WVU Wellness and Nutrition Initiative.

Student Advocacy at WVU is under the oversight of two offices, the President’s Office for Social Justice, the Student Life Office, and the Student Government Association. The President’s Office for Social Justice is charged with communicating, teaching, and promoting these principles throughout the extended academic community and society, as well as fulfilling the relevant legal standards related to civil rights and affirmative action. The Student Life Office oversees multicultural programs, the Student Advocacy Center, International Student Services, Student Judicial Affairs, Student Legal Services, and off-campus housing. Student Legal Services (SLS), established in 1973, provides legal advice and representation to eligible students at West Virginia University, particularly in matters dealing with off-campus housing.

The WVU Office of International Students and Scholars is an Office of Student Affairs and assists international students and visiting scholars in navigating the bureaucratic and cultural obstacles of studying or working internationally. OISS also facilitates cross-cultural and multicultural events and helps international visitors to network and integrate themselves into the WVU community. The WVU Office of Student Life – Multicultural Programs enhances the WVU community’s intercultural awareness and understanding of other peoples and cultures.

Student Government Association fosters student engagement in the democratic process and provides forums for student representation. Its constitution states that its mission is to “maintain our responsibility in student representation, promotion of academic freedom and excellence, contribute to the formulation of University policies, continue support of University goals, promote a high level of student services, provide quality programming of general interest, and ensure personal liberties and freedom.”

Student Organizations Services assists in the formation, chartering and operation of campus student groups and clubs, provides and manages access to meeting spaces, and administers an annual budget as it pursues its mission of fostering dynamic and student-led social engagement.
